Blackburn Cathedral is home to one of the finest Cathedral organs in the country.

Blackburn Cathedral is blessed with a world-class Organ, built by JW Walker in 1969. It was enlarged and rebuilt by Wood of Huddersfield in 2002.

The history of the organs

This iconic organ, designed by John Bertalot and Francis Jackson, was built by J.W. Walker in 1969. Rebuilt and enlarged under the guidance of David Briggs by Wood of Huddersfield between 2001 and 2002. Read the comprehensive history of the organ.

Lunchtime concert series

The organ is not only showcased to great effect through its use as an inspirational liturgical instrument, but also through the regular lunchtime concerts and organ meditations that take place throughout the year.

The Organ in the Parish Church, Blackburn - a Short History and Description

Charles Hylton Stewart, Organist of Blackburn Parish Church from 1914-1916, wrote a history of the organs in the church / Cathedral prior to the installation of our current instrument in 1969. This booklet may be found in Blackburn Central Library and is reproduced here.

Dr. John Bertalot - Organist Emeritus

Former Director Music at Blackburn Cathedral (1964-82) Dr John Bertalot was jointly responsible for the design of the organ with Francis Jackson. In his role as Organist Emeritus, he is a loyal and supportive member of the Cathedral family. He is an ardent global advocate for Blackburn Cathedral and is a great supporter of our organ concert series.
